Match Report
The King's School, Canterbury Boys-U18A vs  Sutton Valence School
On: Wednesday, 09 Sep 2020
Venue: Away

A battling King's team were pipped by Sutton Valence in the first round of the HMC Foursomes at a remarkably windless Royal Cinque Ports GC in Deal. Top pair Charlie Cook and Christy Francis had a ding-dong battle and worked hard to keep in touch over the front 9. However, they moved up a notch on the back 9 and suged ahead, courtesy of 3 birdies. After passing up a great opportunity to close out the match on the 16th, they carried on unflustered and ended up with a comfortable 3&1 victory on the 17th, continuing their remarkable run as a pair, having not been defeated in foursomes in their 5 years at King's. Newcomers Monty Gerrard and Harry Coe formed the second pair, and they battled bravely against a pair which, by a quirk of the rules, contained the top Sutton Valence player. They stayed in touch until the turn, but a surge from the opposition early on the back 9 saw them slip to defeat. So it all came down to the 3rd pair, with Johnny Allen and Tom Fish representing King's. In a nip-and-tuck match, they were all square after 17 holes. Both pairs struggled with nerves, hitting disappointing tee shots on the 18th and, with everyone watching their every move, King's were left with an 8 foot putt to take the match to sudden death extra holes. Unfortunately, Johnny's putt just slipped by the hole, but it had been a thrilling way to end an extremely tight match.
