Day 9

Another long drive today but it was broken up by a trip to Highgate Ostrich Farm in the morning. The farm houses some 800 ostriches (and one very friendly dog) and produces over 10,000 eggs every hatching season. The eggs can support 200kgs of weight so we had fun standing on some and putting this to the test. Ostrich biltong was also sampled, but was not popular amongst the tourists. From here it was back onto the bus for a drive along one of South Africa's most scenic routes to the town of Knysna. The views from the bus were spectacular, with Four Passes a real highlight. At Knysna we took a leisurely lagoon tour and learned about the estuary, the second biggest in the country. It is one of the most dangerous inlets worldwide but the views (and mansions) were a sight to behold. A meal and a well-earned night off followed and it will be an early departure for Kariega Game Reserve, east of Port Elizabeth, in the morning. Hopefully we will be treated to experiences of the Big 5.
